KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: Come May 1, 2020 certain parts of the country look set to move to lockdown Level 4 except for eThekwini and some areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

Provincial authorities are worried about the increasing number of new infections and deaths in certain areas of KZN.

KZN has contributed nearly 21% of new cases in the country.

KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala said: "Even during level 4 risk is still to high. As things stand, it looks like eThekwini will remain at a higher level of lockdown than other areas."

Zikalala raised concerns that the confirmed cases of healthcare workers infected with the virus is rising in the Province despite reportedly having access to personal protective equipment.

“Our initial suspicion is that there may be a problem with the management of these cases, particularly in the private sector. We have therefore instituted an investigation through the Department of Health. This investigation must tell us whether the reason for this is due to medical reasons or negligence,” Said Zikalala.

The province also hoped that the Cuban doctors who arrived in South Africa on Monday morning will be deployed to KZN to help curb the spread of the virus.
