Justice for slain girl

Estcourt, South Africa: A 45 year old man started an effective life jail sentence after he was convicted in the Estcourt Regional Court on charges of murder, robbery and a number rapes he committed between March 2014 and August 2015.
Dumsani Arfies Mbhele was sentenced to five life terms and an additional 30 years for rape, 90 years for a number of robberies and 20 years imprisonment for murder.
Natasha Kara,Regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said in a statement Mbhele would serve an effective term of life imprisonment.
"The court ruled that the accused’s name be enrolled in the sexual offenders register in terms section 50 of the Sexual offences Act 32 of 2007 and declared unsuitable to work with children. He is also deemed unfit to possess a firearm,” she said.
The court heard that Mbhele would approach his victims and rob them at gunpoint. If the were with men in the group he accosted, he would separate them and rape the women. In August 2015, Mbhele raped and killed a girl. Police tracked him through her cell phone which was found in his possession. DNA samples taken from the victim matched his.
During the course of his trial, Mbhele denied all offences, but was not able to explain the DNA evidence that was brought before the court by Regional Court Prosecutor Zwelethu Mata. Mata had also complied statements by victims expressing their fear and trauma.
The Director of Public Prosecution in KwaZulu Natal, Adv. Moipone Noko welcomed the conviction saying justice has been served.
“I am hopeful that this sentence will have the necessary effect on would-be perpetrators. Justice had indeed been served. Congratulations to the prosecutor on a job well done,” she said.
